The domestic and sexual violence hotline provided by SAFE in Hunterdon is a toll-free number that offers individuals assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. A hotline advocate can provide support, crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to individuals living in Hunterdon County and throughout the United States. Victims, survivors, family and friends, law enforcement, social service agencies and the general public utilize the line daily.
The hotline may be the first opportunity a victim or survivor has to talk about the violence they are experiencing or have endured. An advocate trained in crisis intervention will work with the caller to map out a safety plan. Such plans may include preparing for an escape, finding a safe shelter, contacting law enforcement, seeking medical attention, or making an appointment with a legal advocate or counselor at the agency.
The hotline advocate is also contacted by police following every 911 call that involves domestic and sexual violence. The hotline advocate then arranges for a trained SAFE crisis intervention volunteer to accompany the victim during his or her time at the hospital and/or police station.
The goal of the hotline is to be available to any person at any time, including non-English speakers and the hearing impaired. A Language Line is used to provide translators in over 140 languages. Within seconds, a SAFE advocate can obtain an interpreter and connect him or her onto the hotline call. For hearing impaired and deaf individuals we have a texting phone that can be utilized, please call (908) 455-2927.
